Guinea fowls, palm tub, art and ceramics

Follow-up report to our auction on May 11, 2019

Once again, an auction day ended with a very successful sales rate of 66 percent. The quality and exclusivity of over 600 lots and numerous motivated bidders were guarantors of high surcharges and impressive price developments.

With a record surcharge of € 55,000 for a large palm bucket from Orivit AG, a bang took place right at the beginning of the auction in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco area. The extraordinary vessel with gilded metal mountings and a ceramic insert painted with guinea fowl was presented with great success in 1900 at the World's Fair in Paris. For the first time on the market, it could multiply its limit of € 4,000 by a multiple. The price for a glass cabinet by Josef Hoffmann, which increased from € 2,000 to € 15,000, developed just as dynamically. A large Lalique vase, Sauterelles' with patinated decoration yielded 8,200 €, a silver bowl by Georg Jensen to a design by Gustav Pedersen 9,000 €. A silver vase by Edgar Brandt and Georges Bastard for the Art Deco-style passenger liner Normandie went to an international bidder at € 6,800.

Particularly high interest and maximum supplements were again in the field of modern ceramics, where almost 95 percent of all offered lots were sold. Once again, the offer was an excellent cross-section of the development of the 20th century. Among the more than 100 lots, only the vessels of Lucie Rie and Hans Coper together reached almost € 140,000. Particularly sought after were the two colored bowls by Lucie Rie with glazes in manganese, pink and turquoise, which were added after long bidding at € 24,000 each. A sculptural pottery by the Japanese Sueharu Fukami has grown from 3,000 to a remarkable 12,000 euros. Two glass sculptures and a ceramic jug, Visage aux points' by Pablo Picasso, contributed € 19,600.

As usual, the art branch was broadly based. 10 works by Herbert Zangs could be added for a total of 55,900 €, two small works by Adolf Luther achieved a total of 10,400 €. Five sheets by Salvador Dali from the series 'Flordali' produced € 9,800, three works by Magdalena Jetelová € 12,500 and a signed poster by Joseph Beuys increased from € 300 to € 3,800. An embossing 'Spiral' by Günther Uecker achieved € 7,800 and more than doubled its starting price.

In the field of design, a large wall mirror by Max Ingrand was particularly popular for Fontana Arte and could only be added after a long bidding at € 28,000. For a small surprise in the evening, the Libri Rossi made by Olivetti, which started at attractive 600 € and ended only after a long increase with an impressive result of 9.600 €. Two military chairs by Gerrit Rietveld brought together € 10,200. A limited edition bookcase by Ettore Sottsass was added for € 12,000, and a bed by Poul Kjaerholm for Kold Christensen received € 9,600.

Many thanks to all who participated in the auction and / or accompanied them with their interest.
