Biography
Peter Behrens Hamburg 1868 - 1940 Berlin The architect and designer earned a high reputation with his works early on and worked in various art centers in Germany and Austria throughout his life. After training at the School of Applied Arts in Hamburg and at the School of Art in Karlsruhe, he went to Munich, where he co-founded the Munich Secession in 1892 and five years later the United Workshops for Art in Crafts. In 1898, Grand Duke Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt appointed Behrens to the Darmstadt artists' colony, which he headed for four years. As early as 1902-03 he went to Nuremberg to teach master classes at the Bavarian Museum of Decorative Arts. 1903-07 Behrens headed the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts. In 1907 he and others founded the Deutscher Werkbund. In the same year he joined AEG, Berlin as a designer. He built the factory buildings, designed various electronic devices and developed the 'corporate identity' of the conglomerate. In the 1920s he returned more and more to teaching, at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and finally from 1922-35 as a professor in the master class for architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Until his death in 1940, he headed the master studios for architecture at the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
