Michele De Lucchi's designs belong to the history of modernism like furniture to design. The table light 'Tolomeo' the chair 'First' or his numerous architectural projects worldwide - the works of the Italian designer are unique contributions to the basis of the present and pioneers for the future.
The actual plan of Michele De Lucchi, born in Ferrara in 1951, was to study art, whereas his father wanted him to pursue a career as an engineer. The compromise was to study architecture, which resulted in an exciting interaction between design and art. While still a student, the Italian designer committed himself to radical design as a co-founder of the group 'Cavart', in which his strong connection to art manifested itself. Finally, in a performance at the Milan Triennale in 1973, he appealed to the ethical responsibility of the designer whose products and architectural designs influence people's behavior.
He then worked in Florence for Adolfo Natalini, which brought him into contact with the radical and experimental design movement. At the invitation of Ettore Sottsass, he joined the Studio Alchimia in Milan and in 1980, together with the latter and other designers such as Matteo Thun and art critic Barbara Radice, he founded the Memphis design movement. The radical and experimental views on design and architecture of both groups were directed against the design establishment of the time. 'We asked ourselves why we should design new buildings and products at all. Thinking about the social role of design was very important,' says Michele De Lucchi.
