Biography
Koloman Moser is one of the most important personalities of Viennese Art Nouveau. He grew up at the Theresianum in Vienna, where his father worked as an administrator. In accordance with his parents' wishes, he was trained as a merchant, but attended drawing classes without their knowledge. He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and at the School of Applied Arts of the Museum of Art and Industry in Vienna. After completing his studies, he began fruitful collaborations with architects and artists such as Josef Maria Olbrich, Josef Hoffmann and Gustav Klimt. In 1897 Koloman Moser was one of the co-founders of the Vienna Secession. The vignette for the association's letterhead is based on his design. In the years that followed, he worked with other artists to organize events and exhibitions. He also designed the facade decoration of the Secession building in the form of stylized owls, trees and the frieze of the wreath bearers as well as the figural glass window in the entrance hall. A professor at the Vienna School of Applied Arts since 1900, Moser was a co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903 along with Josef Hoffmann and Fritz Wärndorfer. After Hoffmann, Moser was the driving force of the artistic renewal movement in Vienna. Moser designed furniture, interiors, stained glass windows, book bindings, jewelry and leather objects, as well as porcelain objects. His travels to Italy, Paris, Beligin and Switzerland, where he met Ferdinand Hodler, certainly had an influence on his art.
