Biography

Roland Paris was the second of five children in a family that was passionate about art and culture. Both parents were active as writers, one brother was a singer and actor, one sister did batik. So it is not surprising that Roland also found his love for the visual arts at an early age. From 1909 he studied applied arts and sculpture in Weimar and Munich until he was drafted into military service. After returning from the First World War, he moved to Berlin in 1919. In 1924 he married Elisabeth Lisl Austen (*1897), who danced at the Theater des Westens. He then found his motifs in the theater and dance scene. The caricature-like exaggerated figures, however, bear his or the facial features of his wife. Most of his designs were made by the Ernst Kraas fine art foundry, Berlin, in bronze or chryselephantine, but there are also porcelain versions and rare carved specimens from this period. Furthermore, Paris was a prolific graphic artist and caricaturist, he also left behind a self-illustrated book of poetry. Shortly before the end of the Second World War, he was killed in an air raid near Swinoujscie.
