South India, 12th-15th century
Architectural fragment, figure of a female deity

Black stone, standing in a slight tribhanga posture, the left arm resting on the hip, holding the end of a scarf, the right forearm broken off. On the head a high, richly decorated kiritamukata above the streaked hair. The round face with high, curved eyebrows above the almond-shaped eyes and a small, smiling mouth. The slender body richly adorned with a necklace, chains, bracelets and a belt that holds the short dhoti together and from which strings of pearls hang. Large decorative discs on the ears. The back of the figure is flattened, the crown smoothly trimmed at the top. H. 68 cm. Mounted on a modern metal stand.
