Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987)
'Black Bean' from: 'Campbell's Soup I', 1968
Color screenprint on sturdy, smooth paper. 89.2 x 58.7 cm (sheet). Signed lower right: Andy Warhol (ballpoint pen) and stamped numbered: 245/250. Copy 245 of 250 numbered copies (+ 26 AP copies). Published by Factory Additions, New York 1968, printed by Salvatore Silkscreen Co., Inc., New York. This object comes from a series of ten color screenprints based on the Campbell's Soup can, an iconic Andy Warhol product. In 1962, he created a series of 32 screenprints depicting every available type of soup. Warhol continued this motif for over two decades, reflecting his fascination with repetition and mechanical reproduction. The screenprinting technique removed any trace of his hand, in keeping with his mass-produced subject matter. Warhol's own experiences with consumerism may explain his fascination with the soup can. As he said, "I used to drink it. The same lunch every day, for 20 years."
