Made by Jean Carriès, late 1890s. Ceramic. Bulbous, slightly tapered body with a slightly recessed, conical neck and a bulging mouth. The wall below the neck has diagonal grooves. Salt glaze in shades of brown and beige with blue flecks. The shape and decoration are reminiscent of Japanese tea ceremony containers that Hoentschel owned in his collection and which presumably served as a source of inspiration. H. 15 cm, D. 12 cm. Inscribed on the underside with the artist's signet and other stamps: GH.
