Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987)
'Cow', 1966
Color serigraph on wallpaper. Image size: sheet 116 x 75 cm. Signed and dated on the reverse in the glass box: Andy Warhol 1966. Also stamped here: Andy Warhol 116. Framed under glass and so described. Despite his announcement that he would retire from painting in 1965, Warhol planned an exhibition at New York's Leo Castelli Gallery in April 1966. While he was pouring his energies into film projects, Exploding Plastic Inevitable, and promoting the band The Velvet Underground, he lacked ideas for a new sales exhibition. He sought advice from Castelli's assistant Ivan Karp, who suggested he paint "something rural," like cows. So Warhol wallpapered the gallery with his cow wallpaper, whose heads were reminiscent of the famous "Elsie" cow. Cow Wallpaper and Silver Clouds were shown at the Leo Castelli Gallery from April 2 to 27, 1966.
