Cambodia, Baphuon style, 2nd half of the 11th century
figure of the four-armed Vishnu

Sandstone. The finely crafted figure stands upright on a small square pedestal with a peg that originally served to attach the figure to a plinth. Dressed in a pleated sampot held together by a belt. The Sampot reaches high over the back, where it is gathered by a butterfly-shaped knot. There is a pocket on the front of the left thigh, the smooth fabric of which contrasts with the fine pleats. On the head, the braided hair covers the Chignon (jatamukuta), which is set off from the head by a row of pearls. In the lower left hand a mace (gada) symbolising the spiritual and physical power of Vishnu, the right hand holds the remains of a rice ball (pinda). H. 63 cm.
