Bruno Paul
13-light chandelier

Designed in 1901. Manufactured by KM Seifert & Co., Dresden-Löbtau for the Vereinigte Werkstätten für Kunst im Handwerk (United Workshops for Art and Crafts). Fire-gilt cast brass or bronze. A very rare 13-light candlestick, model no. 58, of which only a very few were produced. The candlestick features a round, bowl-shaped base and a grooved shaft, complemented by six pairs of rotating arms. Twelve holders are grooved with cylindrical inserts. The central candlestick features a spike. The movable arms can be used to create different effects. When the arms are aligned in a plane, a peacock-tail-like appearance is created. When the arms are rotated and fanned out, a three-dimensional, expansive candlestick is created. 40 x 70 x 23 cm. Bruno Paul is said to have greatly appreciated this candlestick. It was the only early piece to be placed in his apartment, which he furnished in 1914, in the Museum of Decorative Arts. Such an object was also found in his private living room. Bruno Paul (1874-1968) initially completed a practical apprenticeship in construction and attended the Academy of Arts. From 1896 onwards, he produced socially critical caricatures for the magazines "Jugend" and "Simplicissimus," and created book illustrations and posters. From 1898 onwards, Bruno Paul designed furniture and handcrafted objects for the United Workshops for Art and Crafts, which were presented at all major national and international exhibitions. In 1906, he was appointed director of the teaching institute at the Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts, and a year later, he was one of the founding members of the German Werkbund. Shortly thereafter, he developed the so-called "Typenmöbel" (Type Furniture) as an example of modern living culture. Subsequently, he also increasingly worked as an architect. Paul began collaborating with the German Workshops in Dresden-Hellerau in 1911. In 1924, he was appointed director of what is now the University of the Arts in Berlin. This was followed by a multitude of diverse and successful projects in the fields of architecture and design.
