Niki de Saint-Phalle (1930 - 2002)
Shooting picture 'Tir' from the édition MAT, 1964
Plaster, paint, and plastic on plywood, in an object frame. H. 72 x 54 x 7 cm. Signed and numbered on the reverse on an adhesive label from the édition MAT collection 64: Niki de Saint-Phalle 85/100. Copy 85 of 100 unique copies. A "Shooting Picture" (French: "Tir") is an object assemblage by Niki de Saint Phalle, covered with a layer of white plaster and filled with paint bags and spray cans. The artist shot at the works, causing the paint to explode and splash over the objects. These works continue to fascinate today with their radicalness and openness to interpretation. They are often interpreted as outlets for aggression or as rebellion against patriarchal gender roles.
